Dress Codes in Western Civilization
A significant part of transitioning to adulthood in western society is learning how to dress. This isn’t simply a matter of style and knowing where to shop. To properly function in any society or community, adults need to understand what types of dress are appropriate in what situations. Adhering to dress codes , whether stated or not, is one of the marks of an adult.
There are several general categories of dress that most adults are able to master easily. Understanding the nuances is what separates the truly stylish from the pretenders. In the broadest sense, there are only three types of dress: formal, casual, and business. But each of these can be broken down further and combined with one another to create even more categories.
Here are the most commonly used dress code designations:
Formal dress includes both formal and semi-formal wear. This includes white tie and black tie, when women invest in evening gowns and men arrange for a tuxedo rental .
Business attire is a bit more confusing. Informal dress is also known as western business attire or international business attire. It is marked by suits and ties. Business casual allows workers to dress less formally in a business setting.
Smart casual usually blurs the lines between all out casual and business casual. More than any other attire, smart casual relies heavily on the standards of the specific social group. Casual attire is completely left to the personality and comfort of the wearer. Active wear or sportswear is clothing that is designed for physical exercise or sports. Some people use elements of active wear in their casual wardrobe.
